Carriage Driving Program

The Carriage Driving Program is offered to both the general public and clients enrolled in the therapeutic programs. Students with physical, mental or sensory goals find distinct rewards of controlling a horse or pony while driving from a carriage seat.  Using a horse and carriage gives participants an alternative or an addition to riding, opening up the world of horses to those who may be unable to site astride due to weight, balance, fatigue, fear, the inability to sit astride or personal preference.   HHTRC currently owns three carriage horses, each providing their unique movement and opportunities.  The Carriage Driving Program makes field trips along with the Kansas City Driving Society to area horse shows including the Carriage Driving Show at Longview Farms.
The Carriage Driving Program is under the direction of long-time driving enthusiast and PATH registered driving instructor in training  Sue Martin.  For lesson availability please contact smartin@hhtrc.org.

 A Family’s Story

I welcome this opportunity to tell all of you what a wonderful impact you have had on my daughter Sarah’s life. This is her second year at HHTRC and being involved in this program has brought her a lot of joy.  It makes me very happy to watch her blossom and open up to other people.  Sarah had learned to be wary and shy of others because of all she has experienced, but the people here at HHTRC have shown her that there are people who will like and accept her despite her challenges. She is becoming stronger and has learned that while she has a lot of difficulty with balance on the ground, she can maintain wonderful balance on the back of a horse.  She has grown physically and emotionally through all of your efforts.
Thank you so much.
